ابن أمير حاج
Shams ad-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Amir Hajj al-Halabi al-Ayyubi (823-879 AH / c. 1420-1474 CE) was a Hanafi jurist from Aleppo, Syria. He is known primarily for his contribution to the methodology of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) through his major work in that discipline.
His most important work is at-Taqrir wat-Tahbir Sharh at-Tahrir (Verification and Refinement: Commentary on the Tahrir), a three-volume commentary on Ibn al-Humam al-Hanafi's Tahrir al-Usul, itself a foundational text in Hanafi legal methodology. At-Taqrir wat-Tahbir became one of the major reference works in Hanafi usul al-fiqh and is frequently cited by later scholars in the tradition.
He also authored al-Hilya fi Usul al-Fiqh (The Ornament in Legal Methodology), another work on the principles of Islamic law. His scholarship was focused on the theoretical foundations of Islamic jurisprudence rather than on positive legal rulings.
Ibn Amir Hajj studied under leading scholars of Aleppo and Damascus in his era. He passed away in approximately 879 AH in Aleppo. While not as widely known as some of the towering figures of the Hanafi tradition, his commentary on at-Tahrir is an important contribution to Hanafi usul al-fiqh literature and is referenced by scholars working in Islamic legal methodology. His work reflects the high level of juristic sophistication in the Syrian Hanafi scholarly tradition of the 9th century AH.
