Biography
Ismail ibn Umar ibn Kathir al-Dimashqi (700–774 AH / 1300–1373 CE) was a Shafi'i scholar and one of the most important students of Ibn Taymiyya. His Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim (known as Tafsir Ibn Kathir) is the most widely read and translated Quran commentary in the modern era, valued for its clear explanations, extensive citation of earlier authorities, and strong emphasis on hadith. It is considered the most accessible of the major classical tafsirs for general readers. His al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah (The Beginning and the End) is a comprehensive Islamic history from creation to his own time. Note: may already be in DB.
