ابن خزيمة
Imam
Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Khuzaymah (223-311 AH / 837-924 CE) was a towering figure in hadith scholarship, honored with the title Imam al-Aimmah (the Imam of Imams) for his extraordinary mastery of prophetic traditions. Born in Nishapur, he studied under the leading scholars of his time, including Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, Muhammad ibn Yahya adh-Dhuhli, and many others. He was a Shafii jurist as well as a hadith master.
His most famous work is Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, a collection of hadith that he compiled with strict authentication criteria, focusing on narrations relevant to legal rulings. While the complete work has not survived, the portions that remain are highly valued by scholars. He also authored Kitab at-Tawhid, a work defending the Sunni creedal positions on Allah's attributes against the interpretations of the Mutazilah and other theological opponents.
Ibn Khuzaymah was the undisputed scholarly leader of Nishapur in his time, and his circle of students included the next generation of great hadith scholars, such as Ibn Hibban and Abu Ali an-Naysaburi. He was known for his phenomenal memory, reportedly being able to recall the chains and texts of over 140,000 hadith. He died in Nishapur in 311 AH (924 CE). His contributions to hadith authentication and Sunni theology earned him lasting recognition as one of the greatest scholars of the third and fourth Islamic centuries.
