Biography
Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd (450–520 AH / 1058–1126 CE), known as Ibn Rushd al-Jadd (the grandfather) to distinguish him from his famous grandson, was the foremost Maliki jurist of al-Andalus in his generation. He served as chief judge (qadi) of Cordoba. His most important work, al-Muqaddimat al-Mumahhidat (Preliminary Introductions), provides detailed jurisprudential analyses of the subjects in Ibn Abi Zayd's al-Nawadir. His al-Bayan wa al-Tahsil is a major commentary on Ibn Rushd's own al-Utbiyya, providing extensive analysis of Maliki legal questions.
