Biography

Abu al-Mahasin Jamal al-Din Yusuf ibn Taghribirdi al-Atabaki (812–874 AH) was an Egyptian historian of the Mamluk period. Born to a Mamluk amir, he devoted himself to scholarship and writing history. His major work al-Nujum al-Zahirah fi Muluk Misr wa-al-Qahira (Brilliant Stars about the Kings of Egypt and Cairo) is a year-by-year chronicle of Egyptian history from the Arab conquest through his own era. He also wrote al-Manhal al-Safi, a biographical dictionary of Mamluk figures. His detailed records make him an invaluable source for Mamluk history.
