الترمذي
Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi (209-279 AH / 824-892 CE) was born in Termez in Central Asia and became one of the most influential hadith scholars in Islamic history. A devoted student of Imam al-Bukhari, he also studied under Abu Dawud, ad-Darimi, and numerous other scholars across the Muslim world. He lost his eyesight in his later years, a condition some sources attribute to his intense weeping from the fear of Allah.
His Jami at-Tirmidhi stands out among the canonical collections for its scholarly methodology. After each hadith, at-Tirmidhi provides his own assessment of the narration's strength, discusses the legal positions of the companions and later jurists, and indicates which scholars have used the hadith as evidence. This approach makes his work both a hadith collection and a comparative legal reference. He is widely credited with establishing the grading term 'hasan' as a formal category in hadith classification.
At-Tirmidhi also compiled ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah, a collection focused on the appearance, manners, and daily life of the Prophet Muhammad that has remained beloved by Muslims for over a millennium. He spent most of his life in his hometown of Termez, where he died in 279 AH (892 CE). His legacy in both hadith authentication methodology and accessible presentation of prophetic traditions continues to benefit scholars and students of knowledge.
