Biography

Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Ajluni al-Dimashqi (1087-1162H / 1676-1749 CE) was a Shafi'i hadith scholar and teacher from the town of Ajlun in modern Jordan who settled and taught in Damascus. His major work, Kashf al-Khafa' wa Muzil al-Ilbas 'amma Ishtahara min al-Ahadith 'ala Alsinat al-Nas, is the standard reference for investigating the authenticity and sources of hadiths that have become widely circulated on people's tongues. It examines over 3,000 commonly quoted expressions and provides their sources, grades, and any scholarly evaluations. It is complementary to al-Sakhawi's al-Maqasid al-Hasanah.
