Jabir ibn Samurah al-Amiri al-Kufi, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ and a nephew of the companion Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas through his mother. He settled in Kufa and became one of its important sources of prophetic traditions, transmitting a significant body of narrations that are preserved in Sahih Muslim and other major collections. He is known for narrating a distinctive category of hadiths: detailed physical descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ — his appearance, his way of sitting, his demeanor in and after prayer. His narration describing the Prophet's ﷺ sitting position after the Fajr prayer while the sun was rising, and the companions sitting in circles and speaking of matters of the pre-Islamic period while the Prophet ﷺ would smile with them, provides an intimate picture of the prophetic community. He also narrated important hadiths about the future of the Islamic caliphate, the twelve leaders, and eschatological matters. He was known for his reliability and the vividness of his descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ. His narrations appear in Sahih Muslim, Sahih al-Bukhari, and across the major Sunan collections.
