جابر بن عبد الله
Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (607-697 CE) was a companion of the Prophet from the Khazraj tribe of Medina. He was the son of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Haram, who was martyred at the Battle of Uhud. Jabir himself participated in nineteen military expeditions with the Prophet, beginning from the Battle of the Trench onward, as his father had previously instructed him to stay behind to care for his sisters.
Jabir was one of the most prolific narrators of hadith, transmitting approximately 1,540 hadith recorded in the major collections. His narrations cover a wide range of topics, including the details of the Prophet's Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada), which is one of the most important sources for the rituals of Hajj. He was also present at the Second Pledge of Aqabah as a young boy, though he was not yet old enough to pledge. He studied extensively under the Prophet and later under Abu Bakr, Umar, and other senior companions.
In his later years, Jabir became one of the most respected scholars in Medina, and students would travel from distant lands to learn from him. He was one of the last surviving companions in Medina, losing his eyesight in old age but continuing to teach. He is reported to have traveled to Syria specifically to hear a single hadith from Abdullah ibn Unays, demonstrating the companions' dedication to preserving prophetic knowledge. He died in Medina in 78 AH (697 CE) at approximately ninety years of age.
