Mohammad Hashim Kamali (born 1944 in Afghanistan) is a Malaysian-based scholar of Islamic law and jurisprudence widely regarded as one of the foremost contemporary authorities on usul al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence). He is the founding CEO and chairman of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia and was a professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for many years. His book Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence, first published in 1991 and revised in subsequent editions, is the standard English-language textbook for university courses on Islamic legal theory worldwide. He has also authored Freedom of Expression in Islam, A Textbook of Hadith Studies, and numerous works on Islamic law, ethics, and governance.
