Muhammad Umar Chapra (1933-2017 CE) was a prominent Pakistani Islamic economist and a leading figure in the development of Islamic economics and finance. He served as Senior Research Advisor at the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah. He received the King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies in 1989. His major works include Islam and the Economic Challenge, Towards a Just Monetary System, The Future of Economics: An Islamic Perspective, and Islam and Economic Development. His scholarship aimed to show that Islamic economic principles provide a viable and just framework for contemporary economic policy.
