Biography

Nuruddin Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hasanji ibn Muhammad Hamid al-Raniri al-Qurashi was born in Ranir (Rander, Gujarat, India) and became the court scholar (shaykh al-islam) of the Acehnese Sultanate in Sumatra. His Sirat al-Mustaqim (The Straight Path) was the first comprehensive Islamic legal text written in Malay, making it foundational for Islamic jurisprudence in the Malay Archipelago. He also wrote Bustan al-Salatin (a major Malay historical and literary work) and Hujjat al-Siddiq li Daf' al-Zindiq (a refutation of pantheistic Sufism). He died in India in 1068 AH.
