Prophet
Yahya ibn Zakariya (John the Baptist, peace be upon him) is a prophet of Allah and the son of Zakariya, born miraculously to parents who had been elderly and barren. His birth was a direct answer to his father's heartfelt prayer and was announced by Allah Himself before his conception, with a name chosen by Allah that had never been given to anyone before โ a unique honor affirming his singular place in divine favor. He was sent to the Children of Israel as the immediate forerunner who would affirm the coming of Isa ibn Maryam.
Allah describes him in Surah Al Imran (3:39): "Then the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the prayer chamber: 'Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous.'" Four qualities are given explicitly: he would confirm a Word from Allah (referring to Isa), he would be sayyid (noble, a leader of his people), he would be hasur (chaste and self-restrained), and he would be a prophet from among the righteous โ all four fulfilled perfectly in his life.
Allah commanded him from his youth: Surah Maryam (19:12-14): "O John, take the Scripture with firmness. And We gave him judgment [while yet] a boy. And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah. And dutiful to his parents, and he was not arrogant or disobedient." Wisdom given in boyhood, a heart full of affection and purity, constant fear of Allah, and complete devotion to his parents โ all achieved from childhood without exception, without rebellion, without a period of heedlessness.
Yahya lived an austere life devoted entirely to the worship of Allah and calling the Israelites to sincere repentance and moral transformation. He had no interest in worldly pleasures, rank, or comfort. He was a cousin of Isa ibn Maryam and preceded him in the prophetic mission, preparing the hearts of the Israelites for the prophet whose coming he had been sent to announce. He confirmed Isa's prophethood by recognizing him as the Word from Allah.
Classical narrations indicate that Yahya was martyred โ beheaded โ at the demand of a corrupt ruler influenced by a woman who hated Yahya for his condemnation of unlawful relationships. He died in service to the truth, never compromising the message to preserve his life. Allah grants him eternal peace in Surah Maryam (19:15): "And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive." This blessing across all three moments โ birth, death, and resurrection โ is one of the most beautiful attestations in the Quran to the dignity of a prophet's life and the continuity of divine care for those who serve Allah from their first breath to their last.
