رفاعة بن رافع بن مالك الأنصاري الزرقي
Rifa'a ibn Rafi' al-Ansari al-Zuraqi (died ca. 41–42 AH) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Zurayq clan of the Khazraj tribe. He was among those present at the Second Pledge of Aqabah and participated in the Battle of Badr and all subsequent campaigns. He is counted among the senior Ansar and narrated hadith that are preserved in the major collections.
He is reported to be the figure mentioned in the Quranic story of Surah al-Baqarah concerning the ruling on returning to a divorced wife after a final divorce — though scholars differ on the exact details of the circumstances that prompted that revelation. His name appears in various commentaries of the Quran in relation to early Medinan social history.
He narrated hadith on multiple subjects including the correct manner of prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ corrected a man's prayer in his presence, and the narration of this correction by Rifa'a is one of the detailed accounts of the Prophet demonstrating proper prayer form. This tradition is used by jurists in discussions of the pillars and conditions of prayer.
He lived into the period of Muawiyah's caliphate, dying around 41–42 AH in Medina. His narrations were transmitted by his son and by other Medinan scholars who came after him. His long life as one of the Badr veterans made him a precious source of prophetic traditions in the later Companion generation.
