Ibrahim al-Nakha'i was a leading Successor (Tabi'i) scholar and jurist from Kufa whose legal methodology became the foundation upon which the Hanafi school of jurisprudence was built. He was born around 46โ50 AH and was the nephew of the great scholar Alqama ibn Qays. He studied under senior Tabi'in scholars including al-Aswad ibn Yazid and Masruq, and also narrated from his aunt Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Anas ibn Malik. He was the principal teacher of Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, who in turn taught Imam Abu Hanifa. Ibrahim was deeply learned in the legal positions of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and the Kufan scholarly tradition, and his approach to legal reasoning โ balancing hadith with principled analogy โ shaped the subsequent development of Islamic fiqh. He was known for his cautious approach to fatwa and his unwillingness to narrate anything he was not certain of. He passed away in Kufa around 95โ96 AH. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan works.
