Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ who participated in the pledge of Ridwan at al-Hudaybiyyah, among the most honored acts in a companion's biography, as Allah revealed His pleasure with those who gave this pledge. He was known for his devotion to worship and his extended periods of standing in prayer and vigil. He narrated several hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ covering topics such as standing guard at the frontiers of Islam, the virtue of vigilance in defence of the Muslim community, and the proper conduct of believers. One of his well-known narrations concerns the Prophet's ﷺ instruction about guarding the outposts and the reward for those who keep watch for the sake of Allah. After the Prophet's passing, he settled and continued to transmit the prophetic teachings to those who sought knowledge. His narrations are preserved in the Sunan of Abu Dawud and other collections, and are cited in works of jurisprudence dealing with jihad and the ethics of military conduct.
