Itban ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from the Ansar of Medina and one of the participants in the Battle of Badr — the most distinguished of all the early battles. He suffered from an eye condition that made walking to the mosque difficult and was at times unable to attend the congregational prayer. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him to designate a place in his home where the Prophet could pray so that Itban could use that spot as his own prayer area. The Prophet ﷺ visited his home, asked where he would like the prayer place, and then prayed there, thus establishing it. Itban is most famous for the narration in which the Prophet ﷺ declared: 'Allah has forbidden the fire from touching anyone who says La ilaha illallah, seeking by it the face of Allah.' This narration is preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim and is among the most cited hadiths in discussions of the fundamentals of faith (aqeedah) and the protection afforded by sincere tawhid. His reports appear in both Sahihayn and the four Sunan collections.
