صديق حسن خان
Abu at-Tayyib Siddiq ibn Hasan ibn Ali al-Husayni al-Bukhari al-Qinnawji (1832-1890 CE / 1248-1307 AH), known as Siddiq Hasan Khan, was a prolific Indian scholar, author, and the consort of the ruling Begum of Bhopal, Shah Jahan Begum. Born in Bareilly into a family of scholars, he pursued Islamic education extensively and became one of the most prominent representatives of the Ahl al-Hadith movement in the Indian subcontinent.
Siddiq Hasan Khan was an extraordinarily productive author, writing over 200 works in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. His most important works include ar-Rawdah an-Nadiyyah Sharh ad-Durar al-Bahiyyah, a commentary on ash-Shawkani's legal text; Fath al-Bayan fi Maqasid al-Quran, a comprehensive tafsir drawing on classical sources; Husul al-Ma'mul min Ilm al-Usul on principles of jurisprudence; and ad-Din al-Khalis on purifying religious practice from innovations.
His position as consort of the Begum of Bhopal gave him the resources and platform to publish extensively and promote Islamic learning. He championed a return to the Quran and Sunnah, advocated for ijtihad, and opposed the rigid taqlid he saw in the established schools. He was influenced by the writings of ash-Shawkani, Ibn Taymiyyah, and the broader Ahl al-Hadith approach. Despite facing political difficulties in his later years, including British colonial pressure that curtailed his influence, his scholarly output left an enduring legacy on Islamic thought in South Asia.
