سراج الدين البلقيني
Siraj ad-Din Umar ibn Raslaan al-Bulqini (724-805 AH / 1324-1403 CE) was one of the most prominent Shafii jurists of Egypt in the eighth Islamic century, widely recognized as the foremost mujtahid (independent legal authority) of his era. Born in Bulqinah, a village in the Nile Delta, he studied under the leading scholars of Egypt and became the chief authority in Shafii jurisprudence, hadith, and usul al-fiqh in the Mamluk period.
Al-Bulqini served as the Shafii chief judge of Egypt and was consulted by scholars and rulers on the most complex legal questions. He authored numerous works on jurisprudence and hadith, including commentaries on major legal texts and fatwa collections. His reputation as a mujtahid was so established that he was one of the few scholars of his era whom contemporaries acknowledged as having reached the highest level of legal competence. He taught many of the leading scholars of the next generation, including his son Jalal ad-Din al-Bulqini.
Al-Bulqini was known for his prodigious memory, his mastery of the vast Shafii legal literature, and his ability to navigate complex legal questions with clarity and precision. He died in Cairo in 805 AH (1403 CE). His legacy endures through the students he trained and the scholarly tradition he maintained during a critical period of Shafii legal history.
