The sister of Musa AS โ named Maryam in Islamic tradition and identified with Miriam in the Biblical account โ is mentioned in the Quran (Surah al-Qasas 28:11-12) as playing a crucial role in the survival of her infant brother. When their mother placed the basket carrying baby Musa into the Nile, she told his sister to follow it along the riverbank. When the basket was found by the household of Firawn, the sister of Musa watched from a distance as the palace servants tried unsuccessfully to find a wet nurse the infant would accept. At the right moment, she stepped forward with a calm and apparently casual suggestion: 'Shall I direct you to a household who will nurse him for you and will be devoted to him?' (Surah al-Qasas 28:12). This single act of quick thinking, delivered with perfect composure under extraordinary pressure, led directly to Musa being nursed by his own mother in the royal palace. She is not mentioned by name in the Quran itself โ the Quran simply calls her 'his sister' โ but Islamic tradition identifies her as Maryam, a name that holds great significance in the prophetic family. She should not be confused with Maryam bint Imran, the mother of Isa AS, who lived centuries later. The sister of Musa is one of the unnamed heroes of the Quranic narrative whose courage and quick action, small as it seemed, preserved the life of one of the five greatest messengers.
