ثابت بن قيس بن شماس الأنصاري
Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shamas al-Ansari (died 12 AH / 633 CE) was the official orator and spokesman of the Ansar of Medina, renowned throughout Arabia for the power and eloquence of his speech. He accepted Islam early and became one of the Prophet's closest companions of the Khazraj tribe. The Prophet ﷺ designated him the khatib — the official voice — of the Ansar, as Hassan ibn Thabit was their poet and Thabit was their orator.
Thabit ibn Qays is mentioned directly in the Quran's context, as the verse warning believers not to raise their voices above the Prophet's (Quran 49:2) was understood by him to apply to himself due to his naturally loud voice. Distressed that he might have lost his deeds, he confined himself to his home until the Prophet ﷺ reassured him: "You will live in praise and die as a martyr and enter Paradise." This hadith, recorded in Bukhari and Muslim, gave him great certainty about his end.
He participated in all the major campaigns of the Prophet ﷺ and continued to serve Islam after the Prophet's death. During the Wars of Apostasy (Ridda Wars), he fought under Khalid ibn al-Walid at the pivotal Battle of Yamama against the forces of Musaylima the false prophet. He was killed in that battle in 12 AH, fulfilling the Prophet's prophecy that he would die as a martyr.
His martyrdom was widely mourned. The Prophet's prediction about him is considered one of the clearest examples of prophetic foreknowledge recorded in the authentic collections.
