Ubada ibn as-Samit al-Ansari al-Khazraji, may Allah be pleased with him, was one of the chiefs of the Khazraj tribe and a leader of the Ansar who gave the pledge at the First and Second Aqabah — the foundational pledges that established the relationship between the Prophet ﷺ and the people of Medina. He was among the earliest and most devoted supporters of Islam in Medina. He narrated the famous hadith of the pledge of allegiance (bay'a) to the Prophet ﷺ in which the Prophet ﷺ took the companions' pledge not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to fornicate, not to kill their children, and not to disobey the Prophet ﷺ in what is good — and whoever fulfilled this would be rewarded by Allah, and whoever committed these acts and was punished had expiation, and whoever concealed it was left to Allah. This narration is one of the most important in hadith literature on the nature of the bay'a. He served as a teacher in Syria and was appointed by Umar ibn al-Khattab to teach religion to the people of that region. He died around 34 AH. His narrations appear in all six major collections.
