Umm Khalid bint Khalid ibn Sa'id al-Amawiyya (RA) was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ with a remarkable early history. She was born in Abyssinia during her family's migration there, making her among the very first Muslims born outside of Arabia. Her father Khalid ibn Sa'id (RA) was one of the earliest converts to Islam in Mecca and a companion of high standing. When the emigrants returned from Abyssinia, Umm Khalid came as a small child to Medina. The Prophet ﷺ showed her special affection, clothing her with a garment from Abyssinia and saying — according to a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari — 'O Umm Khalid, wear it out; O Umm Khalid, wear it out' (sanah, sanah), using the Abyssinian word for 'good.' This hadith, transmitted through her chain, is notable both for its content and for the vocabulary it preserves. She narrated from the Prophet ﷺ directly and was considered a reliable narrator. Her narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari and other canonical collections. Umm Khalid lived to an advanced age after the Prophet ﷺ passed away, continuing to preserve and transmit the memories of her time with him. Her unique status as a companion born in emigration and raised during the early Medinan period made her a living connection to the formative era of Islamic history, and her narrations preserved details of the Prophet's personal interactions that no one else could have transmitted.
