Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad was the third daughter of Prophet Muhammad and Khadijah bint Khuwaylid. Like her sister Ruqayyah, she was initially betrothed to one of Abu Lahab's sons (Utaybah) before Islam. When Surah al-Masad was revealed, Abu Lahab ordered the betrothals dissolved. Umm Kulthum embraced Islam with her family and emigrated to Madinah. After her sister Ruqayyah died in 2 AH while married to Uthman ibn Affan, the Prophet offered Umm Kulthum in marriage to Uthman. This marriage gave Uthman his famous epithet 'Dhul-Nurayn' โ possessor of two lights โ for having the honor of marrying two daughters of the Prophet consecutively. Umm Kulthum lived with Uthman until her death in 9 AH without leaving surviving children. The Prophet personally participated in preparing her body for burial. She was buried in al-Baqi cemetery in Madinah.
