عتبة بن مسعود الهذلي
Utba ibn Masud al-Hudhali (died ca. 23–24 AH) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ and the brother of the famous Abd Allah ibn Masud. He embraced Islam very early in Mecca along with his brother and was among those who emigrated to Abyssinia. The two brothers from Hudhayl tribe became among the most learned companions, though Abd Allah ibn Masud's fame far overshadowed his brother's in the later tradition.
He emigrated to Medina and participated in the campaigns of the Prophet ﷺ. After the Prophet's death, he served under the early caliphs and eventually made his way to Iraq along with his brother's circle. He is counted among the Companions who settled in Kufa, which became the center of the Iraqi Islamic scholarly tradition.
He narrated hadith from the Prophet ﷺ and also from his brother Abd Allah ibn Masud. His chains of transmission pass through some of the Kufan tabiun. The relationship between the two brothers in terms of knowledge transmission means Utba's narrations often paralleled those of Abd Allah, though Utba left fewer independently attributed traditions.
He died around 23–24 AH, relatively early compared to his brother who survived much longer. The family of the two brothers from Hudhayl represents one of the significant early Islamic scholarly lineages that shaped the Kufan tradition, which in turn had enormous influence on later Hanafi jurisprudence through the scholarly circle of Alqama ibn Qays who studied under Abd Allah ibn Masud.
