Biography
Wahba Mustafa al-Zuhayli al-Hanafi was born in Dair 'Atiyyah, Syria, and became the most prolific Hanafi scholar of the 20th-21st centuries. He was a professor at Damascus University for decades. His al-Fiqh al-Islami wa-Adillatuh (Islamic Jurisprudence and Its Evidence) is an 8-volume (originally, later expanded to 11) encyclopedia covering all branches of Islamic law comparatively across the four madhabs — the most comprehensive modern work of its kind. He also wrote al-Tafsir al-Munir (16-volume modern tafsir), Usul al-Fiqh al-Islami, and al-Fiqh al-Hanbali al-Muyassar. He died in 1436 AH in Damascus.
