Biography

Abu Muhammad Yahya ibn Yahya al-Laythi al-Andalusi was the primary transmitter of Imam Malik's Muwatta in al-Andalus. He traveled to Medina and studied directly under Malik ibn Anas, and his transmission of the Muwatta became the most widespread version in the western Muslim world. He is credited with establishing the Maliki school as the dominant legal tradition in Spain and the Maghreb. He was called 'the sage of al-Andalus.'
