يوسف النبهاني
Sheikh
Yusuf ibn Isma'il ibn Yusuf an-Nabhani (1265-1350 AH / 1849-1932 CE) was a Palestinian Islamic scholar, Shafi'i judge, and prolific author. Born in the village of Ijzim near Haifa, Palestine, he studied at al-Azhar in Egypt and served as a judge in the Ottoman court system in Beirut, Janin, and other cities. He was a devoted follower of the Sufi tradition and the Ba'Alawi path.
An-Nabhani is best known for his prolific writing in defense of the Prophet ﷺ, the status of the Sufi masters, and the practice of seeking the Prophet's ﷺ intercession. He authored numerous works on the Prophet's ﷺ attributes and the proper veneration of the Prophet ﷺ. His most widely read work is Hujjat Allah ala al-Alamin fi Mu'jizat Sayyid al-Mursalin (The Evidence of Allah upon the Worlds: The Miracles of the Master of the Messengers), a comprehensive collection of the prophetic miracles.
He also authored Jawharat al-Kamal (Pearl of Perfection), a praise poem for the Prophet ﷺ that is widely recited in traditional circles; as-Sa'adah al-Abadiyyah fi al-Ta'rif bi-Mashahir al-Hadratin-Nabawiyyah (on the saints and scholars of the Prophetic city); and numerous other works. He was a strong defender of traditional Sufi-Sunni practices including the mawlid celebration.
An-Nabhani is a revered figure in Sufi-oriented Sunni circles for his defense of the veneration of the Prophet ﷺ. He passed away in Beirut in 1932. His works continue to be read across traditional Muslim communities, particularly those connected to the Ba'Alawi and Shadiliyyah traditions.
