Zirr ibn Hubaish al-Asadi al-Kufi was a prominent Tabi'i scholar of Kufa renowned throughout the early Muslim world for his mastery of the Arabic language, his deep knowledge of the Quran, and his extraordinary longevity — he reportedly lived to well over one hundred years. He directly narrated the Quran from some of the greatest companion reciters: Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with them all. He was a leading authority on Quranic recitation in Kufa and was relied upon by later scholars for issues of text and recitation. He also narrated hadiths from senior companions including Ali and Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman. His longevity meant that scholars of later generations could still access knowledge that traced back directly to the first Muslim generation. He was praised without reservation by hadith and recitation scholars for his precision, reliability, and command of the Arabic language. His narrations appear in the major hadith collections, and his role in the transmission of Quranic recitation through the Kufan tradition was foundational.
