التقييم النقدي وكيفية الاستفادة من المستدرك
Al-Mustadrak occupies a unique and somewhat complicated position in the hadith literature: it is widely cited, contains genuinely important material, yet requires more critical caution than the canonical six collections. Understanding how to use it correctly is essential for any serious student of hadith.
The fundamental rule for using the Mustadrak is to always consult adh-Dhahabi's Talkhis alongside it. The Talkhis is printed alongside the Mustadrak in modern editions, and adh-Dhahabi's assessments provide an immediate check on al-Hakim's grading. Where adh-Dhahabi confirms al-Hakim's assessment, the researcher has two independent opinions supporting the hadith's reliability. Where adh-Dhahabi dissents, the researcher knows to investigate further.
For hadiths in the Mustadrak that are confirmed by Bukhari or Muslim — either because they explicitly appear in the Sahihayn or because adh-Dhahabi or later critics found the chains sound — the researcher can cite them with appropriate confidence. These represent the core of genuine scholarly value in the collection.
For hadiths in the Mustadrak that adh-Dhahabi criticized as weak, the researcher must apply the standard criteria for weak hadiths: identifying whether supporting narrations exist that might elevate the hadith's status, and noting that weak hadiths may be cited for secondary purposes (like encouragement toward virtuous acts) under the conditions specified by the classical scholars.
For hadiths that adh-Dhahabi identified as fabricated (mawdu'), these should not be cited as evidence for any religious ruling or practice, regardless of al-Hakim's grading.
The Mustadrak's value for serious researchers lies in its unique hadiths — those not found in the canonical collections that are confirmed sound by adh-Dhahabi or later critics. These represent genuine contributions to the documented prophetic tradition and are cited regularly in tafsir, fiqh, and spiritual literature by scholars who have applied appropriate critical scrutiny. Learning to identify and use this core content is the appropriate goal of engaging with al-Mustadrak.
