One of the four foundational works of usul al-fiqh in Sunni Islam, alongside ar-Risalah, al-Mu'tamad, and al-Burhan. Al-Ghazali systematized legal theory with philosophical precision, incorporating Aristotelian logic into the methodology of deriving Islamic rulings. His treatment of maslahah (public interest) and the five essential objectives of the Shariah (preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property) profoundly influenced all later scholarship on the maqasid ash-shariah.
