Kitab ar-Ri'ayah
كتاب الرعاية
One of the earliest systematic works on spiritual psychology in Islam. Al-Muhasibi (whose name means 'the one who examines himself') discusses how to guard one's inner states, purify intentions, and recognize the subtle tricks of the ego (nafs). Imam Ahmad initially criticized al-Muhasibi but later acknowledged his sincerity.
