كتاب الرعاية: بيان المحاسبي لحقوق الله
Kitab ar-Ri'ayah li-Huquq Allah — The Book of Observance of Allah's Rights — is one of al-Harith al-Muhasibi's most systematic and psychologically sophisticated works, and it complements his Risalat al-Mustarshidin as a comprehensive account of the inner life of the sincere Muslim. While the Risalah is more concise and focused on practical guidance, the Ri'ayah is a more extensive and detailed examination of the heart's responsibilities, its diseases, and the methods by which the sincere believer fulfills his obligations to Allah.
The title 'Ri'ayah li-Huquq Allah' — Observance of Allah's Rights — frames the entire work around the concept that human beings have obligations to their Creator that go beyond mere outward compliance with the law. Allah's rights, as al-Muhasibi understands them, include the right to sincere worship performed with a genuinely present heart, the right to be relied upon exclusively, the right to be loved above all else, and the right to have one's commands and prohibitions obeyed not merely as a legal matter but as a genuine expression of love and submission. The believer who fulfills these rights in their fullness is the one who has genuinely realized what Islam calls for.
Al-Muhasibi was the foremost systematic thinker about the inner life in the early Islamic tradition, and the Ri'ayah represents his most sustained effort to map the terrain of that inner life. The work is organized around a detailed examination of the heart's functions, its disorders, and the specific practices through which it can be maintained in health and brought into proper orientation toward Allah. Its psychological depth makes it a challenging text, but also one of unusual richness for the student who is willing to engage with it carefully.
The Ri'ayah's influence on al-Ghazali was substantial. Al-Ghazali drew directly on al-Muhasibi's psychological framework when constructing the third and fourth quarters of the Ihya — the sections dealing with destructive and salvific traits of the heart. Through the Ihya's influence, al-Muhasibi's insights became part of the standard framework through which Islamic spiritual ethics is taught.
