المحتوى حول العبادة والصلاة والأركان
Masabih as-Sunnah opens with chapters on faith (iman) and worship, establishing the theological and devotional foundations of Islamic practice before proceeding to the more specific legal chapters. This organizational choice reflects al-Baghawi's understanding that practice must be grounded in belief, and that understanding why Muslims perform specific acts is as important as knowing how to perform them.
The chapters on prayer are particularly extensive and include hadiths from both the sihah and hisan tiers that together provide a comprehensive picture of the prophetic prayer practice. The opening supplication (dua al-istiftah), the recitation of al-Fatihah and additional Quran, the positions and their associated recitations, the final sitting and tashahhud — all are addressed with representative hadiths from the most reliable sources.
The chapter on night prayer (qiyam al-layl and tahajjud) is one of the most beloved in the work and has been the subject of detailed commentary by later scholars. Al-Baghawi selected hadiths that convey both the practice and the spiritual dimension of night prayer — the statement that the best prayer after the obligatory prayers is night prayer, the description of the Prophet's night prayer practice, and the reward associated with maintaining this practice throughout the year.
For fasting, the chapters cover the month of Ramadan, the conditions of the fast, the recommended acts during the fast, and the voluntary fasts beyond Ramadan — including the fast of the Day of Arafah, the six days of Shawwal, and the white days (ayyam al-bid). Each of these topics is covered with carefully selected hadiths from the most reliable sources.
The hajj chapters provide a concise overview of the major pilgrimage rituals, with hadiths describing the prophetic model for each. Al-Baghawi's selection here prioritizes the most widely transmitted and authenticated narrations, giving students a reliable foundation for understanding the pilgrimage before they encounter the more complex legal discussions in specialized fiqh texts.
