Tafsir at-Tabari (Jami al-Bayan)

The earliest complete tafsir that has survived intact and the foundation of all subsequent Quran commentary. At-Tabari compiled interpretations from the Prophet, the Companions, and the Tabi'in with full chains of narration, then analyzed the linguistic and grammatical aspects of each verse. Virtually every later mufassir relied on this work as a primary source.
