Hadith #89
Arabic Text
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو رَجَاءٍ الْعُطَارِدِيُّ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ، ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَدَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ، ثُمَّ نُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ، فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ إِذ
َا هُوَ بِرَجُلٍ مُعْتَزِلٍ لَمْ يُصَلِّ فِي الْقَوْمِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ :" مَا مَنَعَكَ يَا فُلَانُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ فِي الْقَوْمِ؟ "، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَصَابَتْنِي جَنَابَةٌ، وَلَا مَاءَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّعِيدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَكْفِيكَ "

English Translation
It was narrated from Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that they were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. The Prophet ﷺ stopped and called for water for ablution and performed ablution. Then the call to prayer was made and the Prophet ﷺ led them in prayer. When the prayer was finished, a man sat apart from the people. The Prophet ﷺ asked him: 'What prevented you from praying with the people?' He said: 'I was in a state of janabah and found no water.' He said: 'You should have performed tayammum with clean earth — that would have been sufficient for you.'
