Hadith #1580
Arabic Text
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ : أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا أَهَمَّهُمْ شَأْنُ الْمَرْأَةِ الْمَخْزُومِيَّةِ الَّتِي سَرَقَتْ، فَقَالُوا : مَنْ يُكَلِّمُ فِيهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، قَالُوا : وَمَنْ يَجْتَرِئُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أُس
َامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ فَكَلَّمَهُ أُسَامَةُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتَشْفَعُ فِي حَدٍّ مِنْ حُدُودِ اللَّهِ؟ " ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاخْتَطَبَ، فَقَالَ :" إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ الَّذِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهُمُ الشَّرِيفُ، تَرَكُوهُ، وَإِذَا سَرَقَ فِيهِمُ الضَّعِيفُ، أَقَامُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ، لَوْ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ سَرَقَتْ، لَقَطَعْتُ يَدَهَا "

English Translation
It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Quraysh were troubled by the affair of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen. They said: 'Who will intercede with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for her?' They said: 'Who is bold enough to approach him except Usamah ibn Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah?' So Usamah spoke to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Usamah, are you interceding regarding one of the prescribed punishments of Allah?' Then he stood and delivered a speech saying: 'Verily those before you were destroyed because when a noble person among them stole, they let him go, but when a weak person stole, they applied the punishment to him. By Allah, if Fatimah daughter of Muhammad were to steal, Muhammad would cut off her hand.'
