English Translation

It was narrated from Shurayh ibn al-Harith that a dispute was brought to him involving two daughters, two parents, and a husband. He ruled on the matter, but the husband went to complain about him in the mosque. Shurayh sent for the husband and said: "This man thinks I am unjust, while I think him wicked — he displays grievance while hiding a ruling that is sound." The man asked: "What do you say about two daughters, two parents, and a husband?" Shurayh said: "The husband gets one-quarter of the whole estate, the two parents get two-sixths, and what remains goes to the two daughters." The man asked: "Then why did you give me less?" Shurayh replied: "It is not I who gave you less — Allah gave you less. The two daughters get two-thirds, the two parents get two-sixths, and the husband gets one-quarter; the total amounts to seven and a half shares, making your share subject to 'awl (proportional reduction)."
