حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَافَى ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، قَالَ :" مَنْ أَوْصَى أَوْ أَعْتَقَ، فَكَانَ
فِي وَصِيَّتِهِ عَوْلٌ، دَخَلَ الْعَوْلُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْعَتَاقَةِ، وَأَهْلِ الْوَصِيَّةِ ". قَالَ عَطَاءٌ : إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ غَلَبُونَا، يَبْدَءُونَ بِالْعَتَاقَةِ قَبْلُ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Ata' that he said: "If a man makes a will or frees slaves and there is a shortage ('awl) in the will, the shortage falls proportionally upon those designated for manumission and those designated for other bequests." 'Ata' added: "The people of Madinah prevailed over us — they prioritize manumission first."
