Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ قَالَ فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا وَاسْتَهَلَّ عَلَيَّ رَمَضَانُ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ فَرَأَيْنَا الْهِلَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ ا

لْهِلَالَ فَقَالَ مَتَى رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَقُلْتُ رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ وَصَامُوا وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَقَالَ لَكِنَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ فَلَا نَزَالُ نَصُومُ حَتَّى نُكَمِّلَ ثَلَاثِينَ أَوْ نَرَاهُ فَقُلْتُ أَوَلَا تَكْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَصِيَامِهِ فَقَالَ لَا هَكَذَا أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

English Translation

Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Hashimi narrated to us, Isma'il, meaning Ibn Ja'far, narrated to us, he said: Muhammad, meaning Ibn Abi Harmalah, informed me, from Kurayb, that Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith sent him to Mu'awiyah in Sham. He said: 'I arrived in Sham and completed her errand. The crescent of Ramadan was sighted while I was in Sham, and we saw the crescent on Friday night. Then I came to Madinah at the end of the month. Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) asked me about the crescent and said: When did you sight it? I said: We saw it on Friday night. He said: Did you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people saw it, and they fasted, and Mu'awiyah fasted. He said: But we saw it on Saturday night, and we will continue fasting until we complete thirty or see it. I said: Is the sighting of Mu'awiyah and his fasting not sufficient for you? He said: No, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us.' — Each region follows its own moon sighting.
