Hadith #310

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَدَاوُدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ أَنَّ رَجُلًا نَادَى ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَالنَّاسُ حَوْلَهُ فَقَالَ سُنَّةً تَبْتَغُونَ بِهَذَا النَّبِيذِ أَوْ هُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ الْعَسَلِ وَاللَّبَنِ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبَّاسًا فَقَالَ اسْقُونَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا النَّبِيذَ شَرَابٌ قَدْ مُغِثَ وَمُرِثَ أَفَلَا نَسْقِيكَ لَبَنًا
وَعَسَلًا فَقَالَ اسْقُونِي مِمَّا تَسْقُونَ مِنْهُ النَّاسَ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَهُ أَصْحَابُهُ مِنْ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ بِعِسَاسٍ فِيهَا النَّبِيذُ فَلَمَّا شَرِبَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَجِلَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْوَى فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتُمْ هَكَذَا فَاصْنَعُوا قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَرِضَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَلِكَ أَعْجَبُ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ تَسِيلَ شِعَابُهَا عَلَيْنَا لَبَنًا وَعَسَلًا

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Husayn ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abbas and Dawud ibn 'Ali — that a man called out to Ibn 'Abbas while people were gathered around him: 'Are you seeking a sunnah in this nabidh, or is it easier for you than honey and milk?' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'the Prophet ﷺ came to al-'Abbas and said: "Give us something to drink." He replied: "This nabidh is a drink that has sat and fermented — shall we not give you milk and honey?" He said: "Give me what you give the people." So the Prophet ﷺ was brought — along with his Companions from the Muhajirun and Ansar — large bowls containing nabidh. When the Prophet ﷺ drank, he stopped before being fully satisfied, raised his head and said: "Well done — do it this way." Ibn 'Abbas said: "The approval of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of that is more beloved to me than if its valleys flowed over us with milk and honey."'
