Hadith #405
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ سَمِعَهُ مِنَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي زَمْزَمَ فَقُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ أَصُومُهُ فَقَالَ
إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَأَصْبِحْ مِنْ التَّاسِعَةِ صَائِمًا قَالَ قُلْتُ أَكَذَاكَ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ قَالَ نَعَمْ

عاشوراء أي يوم أصومه فقال
English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via al-Hakam ibn al-A'raj — that he said: 'I came to Ibn 'Abbas while he was resting his head on his cloak near [the well of] Zamzam. I said: "Tell me about 'Ashura' — on which day should I fast it?" He said: "When you see the crescent of Muharram, count [the days], and fast from the morning of the ninth." I asked: "Is that how Muhammad (ﷺ) used to fast it?" He said: "Yes."'
