English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Abu al-'Aliyah al-Riyahi — [Yahya noted that 'Awf was uncertain whether the narrator was 'Abdullah or al-Fadl] — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me on the morning of [the stoning of] al-'Aqabah while he was standing at his mount: 'Pick up pebbles for me.' I picked up for him small pebbles the size of khazf [sling-shot pebbles] and placed them in his hand. He said: 'With ones like these — twice [i.e., use pebble of this size].' — and he gestured with his hand. [Yahya indicated he raised them up.] And he said: 'Beware of extremism [ghuluww] in religion — for those before you were destroyed by extremism in religion.'
