English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Shu'bah — that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah entered upon Ibn 'Abbas to visit him during an illness. He saw him wearing a garment of silk brocade [istabraq], with a brazier [kanun] before him on which were images [figurines]. He said to him: 'O Abu 'Abbas, what is this garment you are wearing?' He said: 'What is it?' He said: 'Silk brocade.' He said: 'By Allah, I did not know what it was — and I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it except for arrogance and haughtiness, and — praise be to Allah — we are not like that.' He then asked: 'What is this brazier with the images on it?' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'Do you not see how we have burned them [the images] in the fire?'
