English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hammad, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Yusuf ibn Mihran — that Ibn 'Abbas said: 'When the verse of debt [ayat al-dayn, 2:282] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said' — repeating it three times: 'Verily, the first one to deny [a trust] was Adam (عليه السلام).' When Allah created Adam (عليه السلام), He wiped his back and brought forth from it all who would be created until the Day of Resurrection. He began presenting them to him. He [Adam] saw among them a man radiant with light and said: 'O Lord, which of my sons is this?' He said: 'This is your son Dawud.' He said: 'O Lord, how long is his lifespan?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'O Lord, increase his lifespan.' He said: 'Not unless you give him from your own lifespan.' Adam's lifespan was a thousand years. He gave him forty years from it. Allah (عز وجل) wrote a document [recording this] and had the angels witness it. When the time of Adam's death arrived, the angels came to take his soul. He said: 'My appointed time has not yet come — forty years remain from my lifespan.' They said: 'But you gave them to your son Dawud.' He said: 'I did not do that and I gave him nothing.' Allah (عز وجل) produced the document against him and the angels testified to it.'
