English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hushaym, from 'Ali ibn Zayd, from Abi 'Ubayda ibn 'Abdullah — that 'Abdullah [ibn Mas'ud] said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The drop [nutfa] remains in the womb for forty days in its state, unchanged. When the forty days have passed, it becomes a blood clot ['alaqa], then a lump of flesh [mudgha] — likewise for forty days each — then bones — likewise. When Allah wishes to complete the creation, He sends an angel to it. The angel appointed to it asks: O Lord, male or female? Wretched or fortunate? Short or tall? Lacking or having surplus? What is his provision and his lifespan? Healthy or sick? All of that is written.' A man among the people said: 'Then what is the point of deeds, if all this has already been determined?' He [Ibn Mas'ud] said: 'Act — for each person will be guided toward what he was created for.'
