حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِمِنًى فَلَقِيَهُ عُثْمَانُ فَقَامَ مَعَهُ يُحَدِّثُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ال
رَّحْمَنِ أَلَا نُزَوِّجُكَ جَارِيَةً شَابَّةً لَعَلَّهَا أَنْ تُذَكِّرَكَ مَا مَضَى مِنْ زَمَانِكَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَمَا لَئِنْ قُلْتَ ذَاكَ لَقَدْ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ مَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ
Isnad Chain
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that he said: 'I was walking with 'Abdullah [ibn Mas'ud] at Mina when 'Uthman met him and stood with him talking. 'Uthman said to him: O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, shall we not marry you to a young girl — perhaps she will remind you of what has passed of your [youth]? 'Abdullah said: If you say that — then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: O gathering of youth, whoever among you is able to afford marriage, let him marry — for it lowers the gaze more and is more protective of the private parts. And whoever cannot, let him fast — for it is a shield [wija'] for him.'
