English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Zayd ibn Wahb — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — and he is the Truthful, the Verified [al-Sadiq al-Musaddaq] — narrated to us: The creation of one of you is gathered in the womb of his mother over forty days [as a drop of semen], then it becomes a blood clot for a like period, then it becomes a lump of flesh for a like period. Then the angel is sent to it and breathes the soul into it, and is commanded with four words: its provision, its appointed term, its deeds, and whether it will be wretched or felicitous. By the One besides Whom there is no god — one of you will act with the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only a forearm's length between him and it, then what was decreed for him overtakes him and he ends with the deeds of the people of Hellfire and enters it. And one of you will act with the deeds of the people of Hellfire until there is only a forearm's length between him and it, then what was decreed for him overtakes him and he ends with the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it.'
