English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya, from Ibn Jurayj, from Abi al-Zubayr, from Mujahid, from Abi 'Ubayda, from his father — that he said: 'We were sitting in the Mosque of al-Khayf on the night before 'Arafa when we heard the rustling of a snake. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Kill it! We got up. It entered a crack in its burrow. A palm frond was brought and set alight. We took a stick and dug away part of the burrow but did not find it. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Leave it — Allah has protected it from your harm, just as He has protected you from its harm.'
