Hadith #237

English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya ibn Sa'id, from Shu'ba, from Jami' ibn Shaddad, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi 'Alqama — that he said: 'I heard Ibn Mas'ud say: the Prophet ﷺ was returning from al-Hudaybiya at night. We stopped at a soft patch of ground. He said: Who will keep watch over us? Bilal said: I will. He said: Then you will fall asleep. He said: No [I will not]. They all slept until the sun had risen. So-and-so and so-and-so woke up — among them 'Umar — and said loudly: Wake up! the Prophet ﷺ awoke and said: Do what you normally do [i.e., perform your prayer as usual]. When they had done so, he said: Whoever among you sleeps [through a prayer] or forgets [it] — let him do thus [i.e., perform it when he wakes up or remembers].'
